Treatment of Student blogger in Alexandria Egypt.. Isn't that in humane.?

I think EGyptian should stand up for their right and start thing of not to be rulled by one person..

There should be freedom of speech and press..

Freedom of religion..

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States chided its key Middle East ally Egypt on Thursday over the treatment of a student blogger jailed for making online statements deemed insulting to religion and the president.

"The United States is disappointed that the initial appeal of the Egyptian student blogger Abdel Karim Suleiman was not successful," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said in a prepared statement.

"We are deeply concerned by this conviction and prison sentence for expressing his opinion," McCormack said, adding that the prosecution of Suleiman was "a setback for human rights in Egypt."

"We know that Mr Suleiman can pursue a further appeal and we will continue to closely monitor this case," he said.

A court in the Egyptian city of Alexandria on Monday upheld a four-year prison sentence handed down last month against Suleiman.

The 22-year-old was sentenced to three years for insulting religion and a year for defaming President Hosni Mubarak after posting an entry on his blog lashing out at Cairo's Al-Azhar University -- the highest seat of learning in Sunni Islam.

The conviction drew widespread condemnation from Egyptian and international human rights groups, which saw the case as an attempt to intimidate Egypt's burgeoning Internet blogging scene.

The United States has frequently criticized the Egyptian government for the lack of democratic freedoms it allows, but had recently toned down its comments as it sought Muburak's support for efforts to stabilize Iraq and rekindle Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts.

it's scary ... i'm scared, even of having this logo, i'm thinking of changing it, tho it'll hurt, i made it out of thought and hope...

i've been reading his blog, i don't see why should anyone get put in jail for his thoughts, the poor kid, he's just a kid, trying to find himself in a very confused society.
Reply:I agree it is indeed inhumane and should be openly condemned as such.

However the reality must be faced that in Egypt and many other countries in this world, freedom of speech is something that is not currently available.

The people united, can change this denial of rights.

No outside government is going to do anymore than make a discreet noise about it.

But until that day of unity that brings about change. It must be realised, that those who choose to openly state their anti government or establishment opinions, must walk in the shadow of severe reprisal for their actions.

To think and attempt do otherwise as an individual is stupid and naive.
Reply:DEAR,

I AM AN EGYPTIAN LIVING IN USA, AND THE MAIN NEWSPAPER IN EGYPT ---ALAHRAM--- MAIN ARTICLE ONE DAY WAS :::::::::::BUSH ADMITS OF HIS MISTAKES IN IRAQ.THAT WAS FRIDAY JANUARY 12 2007. I AM KEEPING THAT COPY.

COULD YOU IMAGINE A DAY WHERE MUBARAK ADMITS OF HIS MISTAKES AND BE PUBLISHED AS A MAIN ARTICLE IN THE SAME NEWSPAPER?

I THINK THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

NASSER WAS CRITICIZED AFTER HIS DEATH , AND THE SAME HAPPENED TO SADAT.

IF SOMEONE CRITICIZES MUBARAK IN A POLITE WAY HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS HYPOCRITES WILL RISE TO DEFEND HIM. THOSE ARE BENEFITING FROM THE GOVERNMENT.

IN EGYPT THE GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION IS WIDE SPREAD.

THE EGYPTIANS ARE SAYING THESE DAYS THAT THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT WAS APPOINTED BY MUBARAK SON.

BUT AS THE UNITED STATES IS CONDEMNING THE EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT ,IT IS HELPING TO KEEP MUBARAK AND HIS CORRUPTED GOVERNMENTS , NOTE I WROTE GOVERNMENTS, IN POWER ALL THESE YEARS.

SOME EGYPTIANS ARE SAYING THAT MUBARAK IS A MUPPET IN USA HANDS.

AND ALSO WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO READ WHAT THIS POOR EGYPTIAN WROTE. I BLAME THE US GOVERNMENT BECAUSE HAS NOT PUBLISHED THE SULEIMAN BLOG.

ALMOST WEEKLY SOMEONE IS ARRESTED FOR HIS DIFFERENT OPINION. MARCH 15 MORE THAN 30 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED.

THE PARLIAMENT IS CONTROLLED BY THE GOVERNMENT PARTY AND THE OPPOSITION IS NOT ABLE TO SPREAD ITS IDEAS TO THE POPULATION FREELY AS IT HAPPENS HERE IN USA.
Reply:It is a deplorable act but the reality is like sistablue point out is that Egypt is under a military dictatorship and like all dictatorships there is extreme censorship. what is hypocritical here is the stance of the USA. The political system in Egypt is supported by the USA. Big time. millions of dollars to maintain Mubarak and his gang. The USA knows exactly what is going on and it has its sanction. The show of moral indignation by the US is a blind a publicity stunt. Nothing more. For home consumption. Will do the boy no good.
Reply:what r u talking about ???????????/

(((((((((((((((((((((((EGYPTIAN GIRL))))))))))))))))
Reply:yessir, go ahead the one guy you need to talk to is????//

then you can talk freely to all your cell mates, and please get the last bit right the only reason Egypt is in the equasion is for torture of prisoners without question. and all the $ for projects, but do you think any Egyptian is going to admit any Guilt, its losing face, especialy against infidel( anyone who is not muslim) and he needs to stabilize his own country before trying another, and zoro girl you need to wake up luv you are having a bad dream,
Reply:For once I agree in principle with the Egyptian government.

Don't misunderstand me. I hate Mubarak and his ruling regime more than anyone can imagine.

Unfortunately, I read this guy's blog more than once. I regret doing that. It's horrible. He is a horrible person. He insulted everything that we , Muslims, believe in. He openly declared his hate to our religion, our principles, and our God.

In more than one occasion, he declared his desire to immigrate to a foreign country where he can freely express his views.

However, I believe that what the Egyptian government did was nothing but absolute stupidity. They made a martyr out of this worthless person.

They should have granted him his wish. They should have sent him to any European country. If he is so "special and unique " here, he wouldn't be any special there as he is no different than any atheist.

I believe in freedom of speech. I also believe in respect for other people's views and beliefs. I wouldn't want or agree to anyone going to Europe or America to insult all that they believe in. That would be wrong. As is the case in Abdel Kareem's situation. I think that he was wrong, but I disagree with the punishment. Not out of sympathy, but out of contempt
