OK so maybe I'm a dummy but on the blogger.com website, I can't see anywhere where one could "search" different criteria or keywords or user names to find different blogs of interest... can anyone help?

You cannot conduct a search through the blogger.com website. If you want to search only blogs, check out the various specialized blog search engines:
Google Blog Search - http://blogsearch.google.com/
Technorati - http://technorati.com/
You can try out the Advanced Seach feature to narrow down your search.
